Staff Case Study
Mark Powell – Senior Manager within Supported Living
“I love coming to work and I feel I have a job with a purpose, which is making a difference. Even when it feels you might not be, you are. It’s never ever the same day, which also helps keeping you on your toes.”
Mark has worked in the care sector since he was 18. He has worked with children and adults with disabilities, within residential care and supported living, as well as in adult psychiatric secure units.
Talking about his career path of working in care, Mark says, “Whilst working in America, I worked with adults and children with disabilities and behaviour issues, and loved the element working with children and young people. So, upon my return I applied for a job as a residential support worker and never looked back”.
Mark has previously worked as a senior support worker, deputy manager, zonal manager, senior manager, and service manager with social care companies. Now, his current role at Restorative SCS is Senior Manager within Supported Living.
Having already gained his Level 5 qualification before coming to work at Restorative SCS, Mark still embarks on the mandatory training with Restorative SCS, via both face-to-face and online, as the organisation supports Mark with his continuous development.
Talking about his future goals, Mark says, “I am going to continue to support the service to develop, whilst continually helping to develop staff. I am looking forward to implementing new regulations for the supported living service in the near future”.
We asked Mark what he gets from working within social care.
“It’s hard to put into words really, as it’s definitely a job you can’t do unless there is a genuine desire to do it and that’s something I definitely have. I love coming to work and I feel I have a job with a purpose, which is making a difference. Even when it feels you might not be, you are. It’s never ever the same day, which also helps keeping you on your toes.”
And what does he like the most about working for Restorative SCS?
“Everything! It’s a great place to work. I have a supportive management structure in place and feel valued in what I do. There is continuing support with development and growth within Restorative SCS. The company has an open and honest attitude with a great team work ethic from Head Office right through to all of the homes. Restorative SCS work to a great model of care showing that their focus is on young people and ensuring they have a happy life.”
What advice does Mark give to someone looking to pursue a career in social care?
“Do it! But don’t do it half-hearted. You have to go in head first and have thick skin but it’s all worth it.”
