More supported accommodation and more support for young people in Bradford

Expanding again into the Bradford area, we are delighted to be providing more supported accommodation services for young people, now in the Wibsey area of Bradford.

Our accommodation settings are known for their high-quality décor, furnishings and fittings and our new setting will closely resemble that of our Greengates, Bradford accommodation of Grove House.

More services equals more staff

We’re now advertising our vacancies for more staff: a support worker and senior support worker, to enable us to support the young people we’ll work with in Wibsey to happier, more independent lives.

You don’t need to come to us with lots of qualifications, you just need to want to make a difference and be committed to working as part of a friendly, supportive team. We’ll provide everything else you need for a flying start to a new, or restarted, career.

Restorative’s model of care – care that looks and feels different

We always say at Restorative “children and young people’s care looks and feels different”. Why? Because our model of care is different.

Purpose-built care

We’ve purposely built our model of care to achieve the maximum for young people. Through experience, we’ve seen what works and what doesn’t, taking each successful element and putting it together so that we have the best possible practice.

Principles underpinning our model of care

  • We want to support young people to achieve the fulfilling life and future they need and deserve, so we only provide personalised care unique to each individual, which they’re involved in at every stage.
  • We believe in permanency of care, which means long-term care through the stages of a young person’s life, via our different services, with familiar-face workers they know and trust.
  • Intense support and high ratio of workers is vital to our model of care; it’s how we build a young person’s ability and confidence to progress with hope, to the opportunities they want in life.
  • Celebrating everyday achievements really matters; from these come increased wellbeing and long-term success.

Our Restorative model of care

The three aspects of our model of care all work together, (please see our model below) and are:

  • Restorative intervention

We follow an authoritative, high-support parenting model because this is found to be most effective with children and young people who have experienced trauma. It’s also a well-evidenced model for restoring trust, self-worth and wellbeing. Children and young people are encouraged and supported to learn, go to work, on outings and holidays, and are encouraged to develop and pursue special interests, such as sport and music, just as any other young person would be by their parents or carers.

Where a crisis occurs, or something goes wrong, we act on it, providing immediate restorative intervention, for reflection and open, positive communication to restore children and young people back to a position of stability, with added learning and insight to move forward and progress.

Our model of care is strengths-focused, so we promote, appropriate to age and ability, interests and abilities, positivity and ambition, decision-making, engagement and positivity.

We want all children and young people to be able to achieve their potential in life. Our model pf care is specifically formulated to support this and works to help young people develop the tools they need to progress, with our specialist team’s expert support and encouragement.

Did you know Restorative SCS was founded and created by three experienced, highly qualified social care professionals who all share an ambition to create and deliver an innovative model of care for children and young people?

Restorative has been purpose-built from the ground up by the founding directors to provide care and support for children and young people that looks, feels and is different. The model of care they’ve created and apply to all practice, across all services, is well-evidenced for enabling young people to progress and fulfil their maximum potential.

With a strong ethos of support and development for staff, they are as present in the organisation now as they were since its inception in 2017. Continuing to create a strong corporate culture of excellence in social care and staff progression, their experience in creating and leading social care teams results in numerous Restorative settings receiving Ofsted good and outstanding ratings, as well as creating rewarding careers for life for staff.

Furthering the work on missing persons – the National Missing Persons Conference 2023

Recently, several of the Restorative senior team attended the National Missing Persons Conference, held by West Yorkshire Police at Bradford City AFC Stadium. This important event, to identify challenges and learning around how we deal with missing persons, was sponsored by COMPACT, the missing person case management system by WPC Software.

Mark Powell, our Senior Manager of Supported Accommodation, Jo O’Donnell, Senior Manager of Residential and Chris Kershaw, Restorative Director, set up a stand with the Calderdale missing from care team, working together to answer attendees’ questions.

The conference’s main aim is to assist professionals working with missing people identify the challenges they face in preventing and investigating instances of missing persons, as well as explore key initiatives in missing person policies.

Commenting on the conference afterwards, Jo said, “There were a lot of other likeminded professionals in attendance, so it was great to discuss and share information. The conference also provided an insight into the proposed changes to the missing persons protocols to be trialled throughout West Yorkshire”.

Mark added, “The conference was informative, and it was great to see a presence from various police forces, authorities and professionals. It also provided information on the direction the new national protocols are moving in”.

“The conference helps support the continuing development of our missing policies and procedures, and also covered the Philomena Protocol we follow at Restorative when a young person in care goes missing. It was a really useful day,” said Chris.

The Philomena Protocol involves a living document that must be retained by carers, and updated regularly, especially after a missing incident. When a child moves placement, a copy of the most up-to-date version of the Philomena Protocol must go with them to their new carer.

WPC stated, “We wish to thank the many exhibitors at this conference, who we view as partners working in the field of missing and vulnerable people across the UK”.

Mental Health Awareness Week at Restorative

Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 is dedicated to bringing anxiety into the spotlight and addressing it head on. It is a chance to raise awareness and understanding of the issue, and to provide resources and support for those who are struggling with their mental health.

During this week, our homes have taken the time to learn more about anxiety and how it can affect people. This opportunity was also used to share personal experiences with anxiety and to provide support for those who are struggling.

Homes were also provided with a Restorative Mental Health “First Aid Box” that they could use to help them support young people and help them manage any mental health struggles they may have as well as giving them the tools to help others.  It was also a good discussion starter with both young people and staff.

It is also important to take care of our own mental health and to reach out for help when needed.

Ukrainian-Appeal

Norland View’s community effort for the Ukrainian crisis appeal

In just 24 hours of young people at Norland View posting leaflets through neighbours’ doors one evening, about donating vital supplies to the Ukrainian Crisis Appeal, an unbelievable number of items was received. Friends, families, neighbours and other Restorative children’s homes gathered their donations together, while Becky from the Norland View team also visited nearby stores collecting donations.

The team dropped off the mountain of essential items at the Halifax Ukrainian Club, who will be sending further consignments to Ukraine, so there is still time for everyone to get involved.

Donations are required of: ladies and children’s clothing, toothbrushes and toothpaste, nappies, wet wipes, blankets, sleeping bags, toiletries, sanitary products, bottled water and thermal blankets.

Please check with the Ukrainian Club beforehand that they have room for further donations, before you drop off, as they are clearing consignments to leave for Ukraine as fast as they can. If so, please take to 17 Swalesmoor Road, Halifax, HX3 6UF.

Remembering the Holocaust and other crimes against humanity

On Wednesday 11th February, three of our young people from Somerset House, supported by a member of staff, attended the Holocaust Memorial Day in Huddersfield town centre. The event is part of an annual commemoration in honour of Holocaust Memorial Day, featuring a parade of Weeping Sisters, and aims to promote a kinder, more peaceful and understanding society.

The seven Weeping Sisters are giant puppet-like figures, each one, representing a community affected by the Holocaust and other genocides, including Bosnian, Kurdish, Roma and Burundi communities, and Syrian women. Each of the Weeping Sisters were accompanied by the traditional music and singing from the cultures they represent.

The parade through the streets of Huddersfield helped to remind us of the brutalities committed during the Second World War and to acknowledge and recognise the genocides that have taken place across the world since.

A challenging experience for the young people who attended, they said that they “felt pleased but also sad” to attend this memorial, which relates to some of their own experiences and helps them to understand the difficulties and injustices other people have also gone through.
