Oliver’s final peak

Oliver took on the challenge of hiking the 3 Yorkshire peaks in honour of his mother, and he has successfully conquered the final peak!

With the support of staff and young people from Wibsey House and Grove House, Oliver finished his 3rd and final peak, Whernside, a 7.5-mile trek.

Beginning at the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct, this trail leads to the highest point in Yorkshire – Whernside.

On a clear day, you can enjoy stunning views of the Howgills, the Lake District, and Morecambe Bay. The climb up Whernside is gradual and offers a beautiful high-level ridge. Despite facing dark clouds, wind, and rain at the summit, the team’s sense of accomplishment remained intact.

The descent is steeper, with a flat section through the fields leading to the finish under the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct. Fortunately, the weather improved as they made their way down.

Congratulations to Oliver for completing the challenge he set for himself. It’s a testament to the fact that anything is possible when you set your mind to it.

A big thank you to the staff and young people who supported Oliver – well done on this achievement!

Special Easter Delivery from Friendly House

Great job to Friendly House and all the generous donors who contributed to the Easter Egg appeal for Calderdale and Huddersfield Hospital, benefiting children who are hospitalised during Easter.

An impressive total of 80 Easter eggs were gathered.

The staff at Friendly House, along with one of the residents, personally delivered these to the hospital. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the young individuals at Friendly House who used their own money to purchase eggs for this collection.

Lisa’s 62 Miles in March for the British Diabetic Association

Lisa Gatenby, the Assistant Manager at Friendly House, has set a goal to complete 62 miles in March to raise funds for the British Diabetic Association.

This cause is very important to her as her grandson is a type 1 diabetic. In addition, her beloved granddad was also a type 1 diabetic, so this challenge is also a way to honour his memory.

Stephen & Matt from the Diabetes UK Community Fundraising Team have expressed their gratitude to Lisa for participating in the challenge. They emphasized the importance of sharing and raising funds to work towards a world where diabetes has no negative impact.

In Memory of My Mum

Last October, we shared the inspiring story of Oliver, a resident of Grove House, who conquered the Pen-Y-ghent Peak in honour of his late mother and to raise awareness for the charity Young Minds during Mental Health week.

As we approach the first anniversary of his mother’s passing this February, Oliver will be spending time with his family. However, before that, he also wanted to commemorate his mother’s life with the staff at Grove House.

Oliver made the decision to embark on his second peak hike in just four months, this time tackling Ingleton, as a heartfelt tribute to his mum. The trail spans 4.3 miles and typically takes between 2 to 4 hours to complete. Despite the challenge, Oliver was well-prepared, having already conquered the toughest of the three peaks, Pen-Y-ghent.

The weather during the hike was bitterly cold, and Oliver felt as though he might be blown off the top! Nevertheless, he managed to take a quick glimpse of the breathtaking view before descending back down.

Here at Restorative, we couldn’t be prouder of Oliver’s incredible achievement.

Currently, Oliver is busy planning his third hike, which will be the Whernside Peak. He has even mentioned the possibility of conquering Mount Snowden as well. Stay tuned for more updates on his remarkable journey!

Friendly House Selection Box Collection for Mothershare

Friendly House has managed to gather more than 100 selection boxes for Mothershare, a charity that supports vulnerable families by providing them with essential items.

The team visited Ian from the charity, who informed them that this year, Mothershare has requested presents for 350 children. Ian expressed how the selection boxes help to enhance the gifts for those who may not receive much. He also mentioned that for a child to receive gifts from Mothershare, a referral from a social worker or healthcare provider is required, and the child is then matched with a sponsor who will purchase their presents.

The young people at Friendly House actively participated in the collection by buying selection boxes every week during their grocery shopping trips and even using their own money to contribute.

They are already brainstorming ideas on how they can assist next Christmas.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who donated. Thanks to your generosity, these selection boxes were able to bring some much-needed holiday joy to a family in need this Christmas.

Wibsey House Christmas Volunteering

Restorative has recently opened their 5th Group Living setting in Wibsey, and our residents have settled in wonderfully!

As part of their Christmas activities, they are proud to support Calderdale Lighthouse. This amazing organisation provides local vulnerable and disadvantaged families with high-quality baby equipment and essential items.

Founded in 2018, Calderdale Lighthouse achieved Charity status in less than a year and relies solely on the dedication of volunteers. These volunteers work tirelessly both at the charity’s unit and within the community.

Our young people had a fantastic time participating in a 3-hour Christmas present-wrapping session at the Piece Hall in the Spiegel tent. It was an engaging activity that involved assisting members of the public. Our Bradford Zonal Manager couldn’t be prouder of everyone involved and the exceptional teamwork they displayed.

To top it off, everyone enjoyed delicious Christmas treats and warm drinks while immersing themselves in the festive atmosphere Afterward, they returned home to put up their Christmas tree and decorations.

Bridge House Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Bridge House residents and staff came together to organise a Shoebox appeal this festive season. Their focus was on collecting gifts for children and young people who would otherwise not receive any Christmas presents this year. The goal was to gather as many donations as possible to give to Bramwell’s Community Interest Company, founded by Tanisha Bramwell.

This company is dedicated to collecting food donations and distributing them to vulnerable individuals in various areas including North Kirklees, Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford, and Wakefield.

The young people at Bridge House took part in wrapping the gifts and also took the opportunity to learn more about the challenging circumstances that some children and young people face during Christmas. They successfully filled 17 shoeboxes for the charity, which were greatly appreciated. Tanisha expressed her gratitude by posting a message on social media to thank everyone involved.

Faiza Naveed, Assistant Manager at Bridge House, praised the charity and expressed their commitment to starting the donation drive earlier next year to gather even more support. Faiza said “The experience of educating the children about the circumstances of other children was particularly heartwarming for them”.

Chris Kershaw fundraising for Overgate Hospice

Chris Kershaw, one of the founding Directors of Restorative, has been fundraising for Overgate Hospice.

Chris has tirelessly dedicated himself to fundraising endeavours over the past month. His commitment has resulted in an astounding achievement – a grand total of £668.75 raised for Overgate Hospice.

In recognition of his efforts, a representative from Overgate visited Restorative Head Office this week for Chris to proudly present them with a cheque, symbolizing the collective support and generosity of the entire Restorative team, friends and family.

Congratulations to Chris for undoubtedly making a significant impact on the lives of those in need.

Supporting Mental Health with Young Minds at Grove House

Oliver, one of our Supported Accommodation residents at Grove House, along with his key worker, Ben Hodgson recently completed a walk for Young Minds Mental Health Day.

Unfortunately, Oliver experienced the heartbreaking loss of his mother in February of this year, following her battle with mental health issues. As a result, Oliver has been facing his own challenges with his mental well-being. The compassionate team at Grove House has been providing Oliver with the necessary support, and as a result, he has begun to feel more positive, which has inspired Oliver to take action to show his support to others who may be in a similar position.

Oliver and Ben, represented Young Minds, and completed the Pen-Y-ghent Peak in memory of his mum.  Pen-y-ghent is a classic Yorkshire walk that consists of a circular route starting from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, and climbs gently up Brackenbottom Scar, and then follows the Pennine Way on the climb to the 694m high summit. It is the lowest of the Yorkshire 3 peaks.

The route has great scenery and panoramic views of the whole area, however, the walk itself was no easy feat, but Oliver and Ben tackled it with determination and resilience. Step by step, they conquered the challenging terrain.  Oliver couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace wash over him as he took in the panoramic scenery. It was as if the world was telling him that there is so much more to life than the pain he had experienced. Completing the walk was not just about raising awareness for Young Minds, it was about Oliver reclaiming his own strength and resilience. It was a statement to himself and to the world that he would not let this struggle define him.

Arriving at the summit Oliver was greeted with a beautiful rainbow “that’s my mum”, he said.  It was a powerful moment for Oliver, a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is always hope.

Oliver’s journey is still ongoing, but with every step he takes, he’s getting closer to healing. The amazing staff at Grove House are there for him, providing a strong support system that will help him through the toughest moments. He’s also surrounded by a wonderful community of people who truly understand his pain and are always ready to lend a helping hand when he needs it.

Staff and young people take on Overgate’s Midnight Walk challenge

A group of our young individuals from one of our Residential provisions in Calderdale, accompanied by staff members, recently gathered together to embark on a challenging 13-mile walk to raise funds for Overgate Hospice Charity. The walk offered two different distances, with the seven-mile walk being a more accessible option for participants.

The Midnight Walk is hands down the biggest event of the year for Overgate and it’s not your typical walking challenge!  The walk is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together and raise vital funds for the Hospice. Plus, it’s a chance for everyone to let loose, have a blast, and maybe even be a little silly! The funds raised through this event allow Overgate to extend their care to even more families in Calderdale who are in desperate need.

The young people expressed their feeling of accomplishment when they completed the challenge. Staff also acknowledged the remarkable achievement of the young people and encouraged them to be proud of themselves for successfully completing the entire distance.
